It began as a dialogue between our locations of Paris and Oxford, and then to develop work for simultaneous exhibitions at Lagalerie in Paris and Ovada in Oxford in April 09. We are continuing to debate broader themes connecting with our work. Go to our website for more information

They were exploring how having children has changed their practice and become part of their practice.

The session was mixture of play, films, presentation and discussion. In the talk they used a mixture of powerpoint and banners. Bradley said that 'Banners were like a medieval powerpoint' which I really liked. One of the slogans was 'sensual engagement conceptual rigour'. It is interesting thinking about how people of all ages experience things sensually and how that physical engagement could be seen as part of most successful art. The conceptual rigour part is essential, but there is also no reason to think that children are not capable of this. Interestingly though Townley and Bradley were very clear about their children not being artists.

A theme in the talk was children as curators. Townley had made some great drawings (1 a day) of how their children place objects in relation to one another, and in the discussion afterwards we spoke about the huge attachment that children have to the physical, material presence of objects. They often like to be close to particular objects physically, like carrying a special stone to bed with them.

Another thing I really liked was they started the talk with a banner which was a simplified spread sheet of their accounts for the last year. It was good that they acknowledged the interconnectedness of the challenge of supporting your family and being an artist, and how that influences the work you might make.

SBarbaresi and Roundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947790517613391633noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1992879705277144749.post-67133017474189858712011-06-22T12:01:00.000-07:002011-06-22T12:18:51.410-07:00Paper Planes<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7BCaF1ZzT8bFZPbgAx8C7BhkwEZcMC4_mAAkd37eGo42_Mikefhkl6Ygk2MpS8pWvF2V0gWChyB48DVLn48dkS01055JBLyPwyLnIi_n8yJIi3kRN9YRf3_WDZSMxbe_qYQudJM-GaQA/s200/paperplanes_600_2_nicolasgrosspierre.ashx.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5621123548341221842" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOx0cC5jTIV0NfAqDyXpnjrZ12-FXu2zGuFWxKu9_7rxa9_WvpE1tthhZAPIf9WO2ivlQG8O2q52Zq9BZ9oTUufAYE61gHHorAfjy-HxkxdruJnoo7HEKPQpipHDOsvPK3W0fglz1IDls/s200/paperplanes_600_1_nicolasgrosspierre.ashx.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5621123543542409682" />

Hi Rachel,

This is a show I saw today at Phase 2, Arup, by Nicolas Grospierre http://www.grospierre.art.pl It was based on the design of an aircraft museum in Krakow. It has been in the news recently as it is under threat of being demolished by Lewisham council.

As with the estate at Thamesmead it was really interesting to see how the residents have adapted each place to make it into a individual and often quirky home. I also liked the tin roof prefab church designed as part of the estate.

There are 187 homes here. This is a photo from the 60's.

Sx

p.s. more images on flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/barbaresiandround/sets/72157625747470679/Barbaresi and Roundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947790517613391633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1992879705277144749.post-44321279270305526412010-10-19T06:51:00.000-07:002010-10-19T06:59:45.483-07:00Form Alice and Joe Woodhouse<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh7xAAXikAevXJP_5sZACZY1GOwWeAtRY0y5-C-ZZnL9bC5tz9DqtLMclmujyC39GTqw2bpuZ-KjDT9ILafHHxQ-iczOZpIN8XRIdmJP5UkPBROCI0H67IHTVOj76SGc8JZKumV9fiME8/s200/croppedimage_sml.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529756445933948210" />
Hi Rachel,

Just seen Corrina Spencer's blog post about Form at Transition http://www.corinnaspencer.com They are sister and brother who have worked very directly together on drawings.

Transition website: "Their work begins as a grid of blank paper onto which both of them in turn draw without conferring. After going through a gate marked private (it is on land owned by Oriel College), we passed an old stone farmhouse, and came to the church which has a 16th century building next to it, the old leper hospital which has been re-built - the original was built in the 12th century, and the chapel was added in the 14th Century.

The gardens around the chapel are quite overgrown and it is hard to connect this peaceful spot, which feels rural as a cotswold hamlet, with the hubbub of the Cowley Road nearby. This spot would have felt quite remote from the rest of the city prior to the Victorian development of East Oxford - the way an area like Blackbird Leys, located outside the ring road, feels now.

I had to photograph the ceiling of the chapel - the bold colour works so well in the otherwise simple and undecorated space.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5ANo-5KKSqSFHICLc7eiTFyIpYI2hDr0JZCclHaO_MAPYqj64oadGaUAywUjJMwSAdd7aDX4I-crRtkBxtEXbnmZoc6cxEhctN_1Grd2IpI_UDvyzuwOySsmQOWb-tx9iPl_0YHwVg7w/s200/pickles.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5528383960180005122" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhv0Q0ncmESTvTIs3rP0X3o6T8kwPtKqiHysNjT3k0AgcIKewWak9-m20Oug-o-DBgv1B9mu3O1uHvKqlPnXgyPLmSVu5nHpywzMd5htHNKsRV82BXEUErtFBEUUk_8hF_Lo9U81JpvYus/s320/leper_.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5528380636316896610" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3Fwha6NqbjME5HmIK7Aa8c4sfL4ZN_eMH5PVi9tRX8t8jU1_6FaH4cwE_LJ9_qWGNIdUI5HnX-urrOuxFyoCX3zKn6ttpEtSrTr8rxBgr7Lqvx8XN_n0T06EjoGnvklL-cD5S2FxywCA/s200/bartlemas_roof.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5528383149025000914" />

We visited New College, purely because Z had watched a TV programme about it a few days previously so we thought it would be nice for her to see it. The lady who took us around was very knowledgeable about the building and told us all sorts of interesting anecdotes. It seems that the college are very serious about caring for the building and respecting the original design so it is one of the best preserved examples of Jacobsen's work. The interiors are still totally original, and they replace furniture like with like. The library was particularly impressive, with delicate spiral staircases, mezzanines overlooking the main space, and a reading area which feels cosy and intimate despite being in such a vast space because the light shades hover just over the circular tables.

The enormous concrete beams in the dining room were brought into Oxford pre-cast. The surface of the concrete is beautiful. It looks slightly mottled and is very smooth as it was cast in mahogany moulds. The way the beams extend slightly beyond the outside walls, surrounded by glass gives a sense of delicacy and lightness that contradicts the weight and solidity of the concrete. The pillars that support the beams go very deep into the ground (they are only half visible). I think this was because they were building on drained marshland/flood plain and are supporting so much weight.

<img style="float:left; It has only been out of action since 2008, and is now a public space. Built in 1923. Although it has only been a couple of years it is already being over grown and interesting to imagine how it would be in 10 or 20 years. While we were there B played with some Kindergarten children. The teacher told me how her father had remembered it as fields he played in before the airport was built and now returning to that status. It is right in the city so polution and noise was a problem.

Hitler was a big fan of Tempelhof, and under Speer's direction the terminal was rebuilt in 1934. It was also the lifeline for Berlin, when the Soviets cut off all transport by water or land in 1948.

More images www.flickr.com/photos/barbaresiandroundBarbaresi and Roundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947790517613391633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1992879705277144749.post-77036808827393161612010-07-07T05:21:00.000-07:002010-07-07T05:55:04.161-07:00work in progress<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0B8PIIwDWAWhuR0HyehPpSelLFD6IMmy2ns8e7laaJ5dHD0_6ltKwnz119f4JixNXkrSiMaxzjMwZcdnUeBdJNLtNiz6dmOzpyRcS5UoDhIT-Gzmb7ZRP8hAYMNMXv33Jt-ZGGsYmuhk/s320/DSCF1731.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491146668995094338" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRFuYITRXDkZNZ85__HV81TJltcvBoskCxhLJ7Mif3z47Uft17QPbB9TLzk-mTGbF3GWTJ5wXPaeLBabZ52_8o6xq0iP4TOwYrrsh-RR7qP0OLJwrY7JoJFAd79RiKsH_etKPLesaWsNc/s320/DSCF1728.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491146661692570066" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSnrMvueO47xXLIDU5dihmEvGAfiIMPL_bNC2Oz5k7YaGlZlJFhmtR-4Mzk4Wx9IRGnWem0l3gwp87lVD1WbmAaBofvc-yuDwbIWUlRi8djI3am5f0uvpBOhNkrSl5kkq4e_IW62oIpTY/s320/DSCF1732.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491144451778453634" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu9877DMOCKoboMzTCQct3dXj0bDSGPSp1lvA7SVb7DuREZtVzL_AaadBkNZEXWoHzr4AVUhnkEvoQfMTI1fCZElbzgOl9AYxx_e6n7LB24VjkAHufelTfX-r8_8ptXslgLpOAgdG_wiA/s320/DSCF1736.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491144439753875170" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpddtEkfa4vy-XB5Bzy9el81hU1K2M5LuKgBGojhHfVzgZnHAy3WBneEmQYb_lrl3A_MRPT1upw_N7RXfh6ggmBDFOtqT5hCRQBUKg3x5muf3KnZutA45SksANEbe2OG3ofceV8swSiTQ/s320/DSCF1738.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491144432412241218" />
Hi Rachel,

This is to give you a sense of how things are developing with the piece for the Art and Architecture show.

The images I had been working with, the photos i took of the buildings and grounds were naturally quite geometrical and felt a bit restrictive with the projection. My starting point for where i have got to now was the plastic cover for B's alphabet stamps (that came free with a newspaper). When projected it reminded me of an ariel view of a group of buildings. So I started working with a google earth image of Brunel University, and cutting into and painting onto the plastic.

I painted onto some paper on the wall to try and give a sense of how the projection might work with a wall painting. I'm not sure its totally successful, but I could imagine it working if the painting was a bit more pared down and selective. I really like working with this push and pull between the projected image and the painting.

A couple of images also of using different materials with projecting.Barbaresi and Roundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947790517613391633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1992879705277144749.post-34800348176393373392010-05-24T13:18:00.000-07:002010-05-24T13:40:47.137-07:00Surfacing brieflyI feel i should post on the blog, just to say i'm here! My time and energy has been directed elsewhere in the last 8 months as you know. It has taken a long time to reach a stage where i get some 'me' time, but Poppy has started napping on her own, so i get an hour or two every day when i'm not holding a baby now. I think it will be a while before i'm really involved in my/our work again! But i have the occasional thought/idea. Its great to see what you're doing and your ideas develop for the work for Brunel's art and architecture exhibition.Barbaresi and Roundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947790517613391633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1992879705277144749.post-31337794816277737552010-05-02T11:40:00.000-07:002010-08-01T02:51:44.891-07:00Bradford<img style="float:left; It has a very sympathetic relationship with the hills, and the zig zag flow of the 5 rise locks. Since the financial crisis and government bail out the savings part of the business was sold to Santander. It is now up for sale/let.

Also the Yorkshire building society headquarters in Bradford.

And we took a look at the big hole in the middle of Bradford at the moment. There were plans to 'regenerate' the centre. The existing buildings were demolished, then the financial crisis of 2008 happened and it has been left derelict. There are posters around the site saying bitterly, 'Bradford's regeneration, The Sky's the limit'

Modern ruins in general is quite a key theme of our work, starting with the Thamesmead project, and something I've been thinking about a lot since going to the derelict Iraqi embassy last summer. I was interested to read this piece in Frieze January issue http://www.frieze.com/issue/article/decline_and_fall it has some interesting references for other artists who have worked are working with this theme such as: Martha Rosler’s 1993 video How Do We Know What Home Looks Like?,where she explores Le Cobusier’s Unité d’Habitation at Firminy-Vert.

I wonder about the danger of sentimentality towards Modernism, a nostalgia for an era of greater certainty, "The variously thoroughgoing or superficial archaeology of architectural and artistic Modernism that has exercised so many artists in the last decade is patently, on one level, a discourse on ruins in a Romantic mode."

I've put all the pics on http://www.flickr.com/photos/barbaresiandround

SBarbaresi and Roundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947790517613391633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1992879705277144749.post-39052247730157671302010-04-03T09:39:00.000-07:002010-04-03T11:30:42.248-07:00Brunel University<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpwoU1wMHQY886ymFv3BfBdVSe8yfb9NjYIPe-_93Tr-_IF0gCk7b-xbElWBRDsHOcMlZacW0WMst-TbgWw_5YvVw752wsnR63PylYaOJhmBJAvhoUHw8JTfXDjD0v9cweOL7Ngelhaj8/s320/bu22.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5455980215591717426" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL0z5UTaP9TIOE4J3kvyLW1CjuiVeWHqAx_nR_Zo9_jq4l-koAUkKzfA_eaSkLntLrUVfG-1VWxRu9v1i9GbP_6o4cwZce2kxBy1VCvwB87XeTRgJ3BXKiejmA84jIXswlgbBn16_Q7gw/s320/bu19.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5455980212819392034" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFJ-4oGK62ijSXfhO_OTvj99MUWKA-4cw3lySFtlSTahT_rD0R7iiowZlhB3r7YNJdPb9LvlE-w9NFWpAJqOy9jXSfx4Z0913lgvxj16ATL4N5nX57nJnkG4cknGeWzreb73MIZ3m5ZTg/s320/bu24.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5455980206216063842" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEoVFMvbaRRE8MiUMNHQ-FOs5U6abO5PnSgde491MFFW9LKliASrYNbk2y3Ad7ZgRytHWD1Ezdn6m8VFnyekYG6b08CZgVPSZDPDrC3Lj-tvABUMSVy2jQigZaaLLnItuil9ZP8CuJ8co/s320/bu18.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5455980202544465186" />

Hi Rachel,

I've put the photos of Brunel University on www.flickr.com/photos/barbaresiandround and found out a little about the history of the Campus at Uxbridge.

It came about from the radical changes made in further education post-war, whereby each education authority had to submit plans for its own area with a view to meeting the growing needs of the population. Brunel university was a development from Acton Technical college. In 1957 it was decided that the facilities at Acton were holding back the college's growth. One site contintued at Acton with National Certificate and craft courses, and approval was given for the site at Uxbridge to focus on technology and was called Brunel college of Technology, then was granted University status in 1966. In 1971 it left the Acton site and the whole University was brought together at Uxbridge.

The site and buildings were designed by Sheppard, Robson & Partners www.sheppardrobson.com and the main phases built in 1965-7. The idea of the students feeling loyalty to the University as a whole rather than just departments was important to the concept. The buildings are interconnected and are designed to bring students of different discaplines together.

SBarbaresi and Roundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947790517613391633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1992879705277144749.post-65918039729664114132010-02-28T07:50:00.000-08:002010-03-31T06:19:47.118-07:00more Landy<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXAzvE39zBE-ottB2sEQkr382_biHcvsxMTgZebjFxwNDFNngKGuZQKfJXMuewm02ArvztKCLG3KPbmrDII2zYMSX0t8FsjsiMIjoAWuaV4mA_TmpOyYjUAnsrTjrH3Jtomq-QYq5CRLM/s320/landy3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454779380753646578" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2arRD90zN6pa6VpGhl61MYtJ1P0uTM-yVDYCL9rLG2r_wodiaSzXXiiBsP8wWhO80ZV9cU5G7VwPoPcZXxr0yFUNKMcAKBsI9Z-qy_Ysb-9ZCSIb3zcAWQ_2ktHgmPZiBLjOVfZjQgPc/s320/landy2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454779374116270018" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpQZhSeY6I2OzEgl2suQyOJ08MWbzChT2iQgH-GiSJZ94HbHul5th4fig4uPegv_oP_tV8j-g0DuvtreMm9LR96OseVGTGH6XE8WMiI3bbehRIoD_oMuWLJzlipb88Cw1T_iuc5RaAGN8/s320/landy1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454779369399904178" />
Was wondering about Oxford / Paris Correspondence and how we made art from very little, or things considered without value - literally discarded. How does it relate to ideas about giving art value? It probally has little relationship now. It's the opposite of contracts medieval artists had with a church they were being commisioned by, where the amount of lapis lazuli and gold leaf in a madonna would be specified.

I went to the closing party. It was interesting to see the types of work people had thrown in. Lots of big painterly painting. Michael Landy was there and asked me about it. It was one of the bourse de travail or job centre designed by Niemeyer in the northern Parisian suburb of Bobigny.

I guess he wants to make sure that people aren't coming and putting their rubbish in it. But I had to fill in quite an official form about rights to the work and it was archived. I was looking at his tweet www.twitter.com/LandysArtBin and he was talking about peoples contributions. He seems to value things sent from a long way or where there is alot of effort or loss involved.

SxBarbaresi and Roundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947790517613391633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1992879705277144749.post-41857051751695959422009-10-21T17:55:00.000-07:002009-10-21T18:05:28.251-07:00Berlin Wall Paintings<img style="float:left; Its 1.00 and no sign of sleep, so hello! Anyway might as well make use of this time. There was no security around the Iraqi embassy, you could just walk in, though you had to negotiate the overgrown foliage and trees blocking pathways and exits. The thing that is so bizarre about the place and why it has been abandoned is that no state has authority over it. DDR does not exist, and I guess Iraq has other things on its mind to deal with. Technically the German police would have to have Iraqi permission to enter. Call me a paranoid parent, but it did feel just a bit edgy for a family outing.

I hope you don't mind if I keep blogging about stuff at the moment. I know you are not online and have far more significant events happening, but its handy to record things.

I'd like to show you some images of Schlangenbader Straße - The Snake, on the south-west edge of Berlin. Its a housing development with a motorway running through the core of the buildings. Its quite an interesting angle on our work both on housing and the Périphérique and Oxford Ring road and their effect on the spaces and communities around them. Here is a development designed with the road at the centre. It was conceived and built during the 70's and opened in 1980. The apartments cascade downwards in terraces, similar to some of the flats at Thamesmead. It is clearly well maintained and there is a sense of the residents having a pride in their homes. There was also a very imaginative playground running the length of the estate. It has shops, and a cinema as part of the estate.Barbaresi and Roundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947790517613391633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1992879705277144749.post-42251586463609744132009-09-18T22:33:00.000-07:002009-09-18T23:02:15.468-07:00Back again!Hi Suzy,
This blog has been much more round than barbaresi lately. I think your life has been a bit more exciting! Still, I've handed in my coursework and started catching up with the backlog now. I have a long to-do list, but there is light...

The photos of the Iraqi embassy are amazing. How on earth did you get access? Was it a private party? Its very interesting that the furniture, books and other paraphernalia are still there after so many years. Is there a lot of security around the building? Or do you think people are just wary?

Its fascinating to see buildings deteriorating slowly, becoming exposed, weathered, out-of-date. Most buildings which are in use change very frequently and their histories are quickly covered up with new layers of decoration or furnishings. This process seems to get faster and faster. I think my grandparents went through most of their lives with the same set of furniture but now most people respond to new fashions and tastes change within a few years. It is hard to find spaces and buildings that have been left alone. I think, for me, part of the appeal of going to the edge of the city for our project was to be in spaces that have been forgotten and allowed to change in slow and haphazard ways. There was also a sense of discovery in really looking at and absorbing places that are usually overlooked.Barbaresi and Roundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947790517613391633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1992879705277144749.post-67510927038663477522009-09-15T06:11:00.000-07:002009-09-15T07:19:47.476-07:00DDR Iraqi Embassy<img style="float:left; Would like to tell you about our visit to a party at the old DDR Iraqi Embassy, before I forget. It is derelict but in a surprisingly good state considering it has been abandoned for 20 years. Both administrations were in free fall. DDR from the unification and then Iraq from the 1st gulf war in the early 90's. Due to a one-off agreement between the two socialist states this site in Pankow will be forever Iraqi. Apparently the German police can not enter it without Iraqi permission.

The building looks 60's with clean-line modernism. The grounds are an overgrown forest with trees popping up through the gates. Inside were lots of decaying 60's and 70's furniture, with some hints at more sinister uses like matted thick fibres presumably for soundproofing spilling out of a door, and an old manual typewriter with extensions on the keys that looked like they were for typing in code.

Everywhere were images and books celebrating Saddam Hussein. Matt picked up one with pictures of his family on a seaside holiday. There were piles and plies of books. It looks like it was left in a hurry just as it was with no-one packing up any of the documents. Thinking about our theme while looking at Thamesmead of how 60's and 70's architecture grows old, I guess the reasons for neglect or careful upkeep are crucial part of how they are in the present. This is a pretty dramatic example.Barbaresi and Roundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947790517613391633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1992879705277144749.post-43289076167690672502009-08-15T13:53:00.000-07:002009-08-15T14:11:03.045-07:00<img style="float:left; Its called Hansaviertel and occupies a space at the edge of the Tiergarten, so very green and central. They were built in the 1950's by high profile architects like Niemeyer, Mies van de Rohe, Alvar Aalto, Egon Eiermann, Walter Gropius. The residents obviously cherish them and they are immaculately maintained. There are a couple of churches and a library built as part of the estate. The first few images are of the Niemeyer.Barbaresi and Roundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947790517613391633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1992879705277144749.post-68721367311924175202009-08-12T00:52:00.000-07:002009-08-12T01:21:14.632-07:00EisenhüttenstadtHi Rachel,

We made a trip out from Berlin to Eisenhüttenstadt, almost on the Polish border. Its an 'ideal' town which was founded in 1950 as a model town alongside a steel mill. Some of the architecture is Stalinist Neo-Classical, and the later architecture Plattenbau (pre-fabricated)

After reunification the competition from West German steel makers and the collapse of markets in Eastern Europe meant they had to lay off workers. In 1995, the steel mill was privatized and sold to the Belgian steel maker Cockerill-Sambre, now part of Arcelor Mittal. As a result the population has gone from 53,048 in 1988 to 34,818 in 2005. It is unbelivabley quiet, and we were there on a saturday afternoon.Barbaresi and Roundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947790517613391633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1992879705277144749.post-18285242548504586452009-08-07T01:26:00.000-07:002009-08-09T13:00:18.675-07:00The World WithinHi Rachel,

Been to see this show at Stedefreund. The project is inspired by the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall, and explores the idea of boundaries in the city in different ways. So really interesting for us. There was one piece based on an illuminated kebab sign, by Inken Reinert. The artist talked about how he grew up in west Berlin where there was a Turkish community and so Kebab shops were familiar, When the wall came down he moved to East Berlin and remembers the first Kebab shop arriving, and the surprise and initial awkwardness from residents.

http://www.stedefreund-berlin.de

Its almost too obvious a point to make, but the Berlin wall is perhaps the clearest example of some of the issues we explored in 'Oxford / Paris Correspondence' In some ways the wall is now physically invisible for large parts of its route. But other indicators like forms of social housing, or communist monuments feel quite poignant. Talking to people of our age who grew up in the DDR there seems to be a sadness that their history is being neglected, and major DDR buildings not well maintained.

We have made quite a lot of trips further east. (especially to a geogeous lake Orankesee to swim) And although Prenzlauer Berg where we are staying is funky and fun old east Berlin, not far way it becomes quite bland and monolithic and there seem to be differences in styles and habits.

SxBarbaresi and Roundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947790517613391633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1992879705277144749.post-1350832338341905152009-07-30T14:06:00.000-07:002009-07-30T14:19:33.204-07:00Some more images from our Ovada show<img style="float:left; The work is described as 'drawings'. They really push the possibilities of what drawing can be. Weaving, and meshes of threads. The imagery is to do with themes of water and natural processes. The construction of the pieces is breathtakingly delicate and intricate. The press release says the pieces are made from spray paint layered on polystyrene, the surface must be extremely tough to hold together in such finely cut sections.

SxBarbaresi and Roundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06947790517613391633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1992879705277144749.post-24257670170835237432009-04-10T12:42:00.000-07:002009-04-10T13:05:08.920-07:00Isabelle Krieg show<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUo7khzn8izOh4mTpWsKX4aS9C4qCfSajlteQj7ijFbHe3hkKlYXxjs1k7bTps4VV5utrYaVBPM7tXdyxa-vdiVj2BysDRQ6oicMNNZ4JB_YLlYFwSjc4qkq9q10vEyiYdcmWmwBq9L6A/s320/IMG_2827.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5323156261818776146" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi42NDh4zT5M_wjjv2ORzpisEuB_5AXCK-FyYaSWlsBQ2vbkI7SO7a9zOnntCDFs8-AUKVwowDvFiMd1CV3UPwMADk7y54Xv8ypzY49vW8g_vzDO5l3eSL0j_QvJAMVSvOOSokpfLKd9F4/s320/IMG_2830.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5323156262320497746" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8ZgnFQCVEO7ibRzPfMOFYlMXsO6cg85GOCpNY6iu4Er7thsIj9cqTtHvQBJcoS48NeBexURIW08KGq1ve-uV38jEf3SCx43MfK2LMYi136jJmzez8df_-aCSS6kAl1Vl_6uRqq040Dbg/s320/likeyouisabelle_krieg_substitut_09.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5323156258406305938" />
Hi Rachel,

I've just seen a really magical show at Substitut Gallery in Berlin. 'Kompost' by Isabelle Krieg. The first room was a collection of household and kitchen items of furniture and utensils which were covered with compost and seeded, with grass sprouting up from a rich black soil. I've seen work using plant growth before, but it was the way it was happening on these everyday objects which made for an erie and slightly comic juxtaposition. As if you are looking at a situation with a time lag.

There was also a piece with piles of 'dirty' coffee cups on a tray. The stains and foamy residues formed faces who look like political figures or media images from newspapers. Such an everyday object, but the imagery is really clear.
